I love my treadmill...it's one of the best exercises you can do.
The best way to burn fat using a treadmill is to do "intervals" which basically means to mix it up a bit. Start off at a warm up pace and then really push hard for a minute or two. Then slow down to a medium speed to recover a bit and then go back to full speed for another minute or two. Repeat this pattern a few times. You'll see better results than just going for a steady 30 minutes or so.
And, if you want to burn even more fat, do some strenth training first and then do your treadmill routine...highly recommended.
