Retin-A & Hands...

I've been using Retin-A for about 6-7 weeks now with phenominal results. I also apply it to my neck and hands. (I was getting a chicken neck and it's almost gone!) I was wondering if anyone knows why my hands and neck don't peel? My face peels, but not my neck & hands, and I'm using the same amount & strength on them as I do my face. Although it is taking longer to see the same results as I'm getting for my face.

Also, someone told me you should not exfoliate while using RA? If that's true why do I keep seeing posts about an exfoliating mitt that people are raveing about? This aging stuff is so complicated! lol

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

My hands and neck don't peel either. But yes, my face does. I do gently exfoliate it with my micro-fiber cloth at least 2 times per week. It just gets all that stuff off and makes your skin look polished with a glow.

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

Thanx goatlady. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I just wonder why. Skin is skin~yes

My neck feels itchy. Do you get that too???

I've been thinking about getting one of those cloths. I read in one of these threads about a microfiber mit. I even wrote it down, but can't find it now.

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

Yes the neck and chest are more sensitive than the face, so be careful exfoliating there!

This is the best microfiber cloth IMO, but how are you going to pack it when it's wet? It takes half a day to dry.

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

I haven't applied RA to my neck but I do apply it to my hands. They never peel either. Kind of opposite after using a TCA peel on your hands. It take awhile to get your hands to peel, but then it takes WEEKS to get them to stop peeling-

As far as the packing goes on the wet micro fiber. I have had to pack mine before being wet. I lay it flat in a gallon zip lock baggie and cut holes in it for it to breath, works very well-

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

i have a similar cloth not a microfiber but the type they use in a spa to scrub the mud off you. if it is still wet and i am travelling i sandwich it inside a couple of dry towel wash cloths and roll the whole thing up like a swill roll.

keeps is ptotected and even dries it out!

I thought if I applied the retin-a to my neck it would look more crinkly.

SO the hands DO peel?! Darn. I AM seeing a difference in them. It's just taking longer than with my face. I'm sure it's because they take far more abuse. Dishes, handwashing with harsh soap, etc.

That's usually not a problem. The flight attendant union requires that you be given 8 hours of rest. But they can reduce you to 6 hours. If they do however, the next night they have to give you 10 hours of rest. It's all very complicated. But all I have to do is set it near the [very drying] hotel heater and it'll be dry in no time (along with my sinuses, mouth, eyes........)

GYMRat, what's this Baby-Q thing I hear you got for Christmas? After listening to Fawnie, it sounds VERY complicated! You girlz are insane!

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

people tell me, I have hands of a twenty year old. trust me, i'm much older than twenty. my secret is platex gloves for dishes and cleaning & hand lotion roughly 3 times a day. my routine for the last 20 + years. interesting the skin on our neck and back of hands is thinner than the face, but retin a wouldn't hurt in those areas. i wouldn't worry too much about the hands peeling. you may want to apply the retin a about 2x a week and not every day. can't answer on the exfoliating question -- everyones skin reacts differently. my latest beauty accident was using Olay Pro-X on my neck. it came in the mail and found it too harsh for my face, so on my neck it went. in just a short time, my neck has seen a 40% improvement. i'll repurchase this for my neck only.

OP can you get me discount airline tickets? i'm wanting to go to Hawaii!

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

I use Differin, a form of retin a on my face, hands and neck for about 4 months now and have not peeled at all my skin feels just a little dry, I hope this doesn't mean it is not working? Have recently bought retina 0.05% which is stronger than Differin, do you think this will be too harsh for my usually sensitive skin, maybe I will need to buffer it. Grateful for any comments.

Hjay-I use RA on the back of my hands and they have NEVER peeled. My hands only peel when I apply TCA to them.

Blue - yeh but it isn't complicated at all once you do it a couple times. Easy-peasy! The timer lets you know when to move to a different area. It's really relaxing and you can do it while you watch TV, if you do that sort of thing!

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

Gymrat and Fawnie, I see the two of you joined this forum approx. a year ago, HOW LONG have the two of you been "working" on your skin? And can I ask how old you are? It SUCKS [starting] to get old! Coloring my gray roots every 6-8 weeks, waxing, and now retin, etc..... Arghhhhhhhhhh......and I don't think it's going to get any better from here on out.

There's an old saying, "Youth is wasted on the young!" It is SO true.

Re: Retin-A & Hands...

"Working on my skin"????? Since I was a teenager using Clearasil!!!

I don't think of it as "work" tho....that's defeatist. It's an endeavor and a quest!

Facial exercise since 2007
babyQ since 2007
Retin-A on and off since 1993 or so
Vit C since last year
Eye cream since I was 22
Sunscreen on and off
Moisturizer since I was 20
Exfoliation forever

Most of the big stuff I began when I read about them on a forum like this one and asked a lot of questions, just like you are. It's fascinating isn't it.

How old are we? You must be joking!

How long have I been working on my skin??? Well that is a job that never stops!!! Oh lets see......I started using Clinique skincare products at the age of 16. And advanced from there- Started using eye cream at 28. Started using sunscreen at 25, but started using SPF 30+ at 30. Started using Retin A in 1991. I started going to a derm at the age of 20. Had my first facial at 22, and haven't stopped with them yet. I have had blue light treatments throughout 2005, 2006, and 2007. I had a series of microderms, peels and Titan laser in 2009. I have used so many different face products I could not begin to even list them. I have use just about every type of antibiotic and topical for acne, I could open a pharmacy. I have done my own home peels since 2008. Have had botox, Restylane and Juvederm. Started DIY Vit C in 2009...................gosh am I done yet.....................oh just got Baby Q for Christmas I have yet to try him out-

And you ask how old I AM?????????? Old enough to know this taking care of your skin is A LOT of work!! Thank goodness I have fawnie to help through it !!

The skin on my face peeled. My chest was burned.
The skin on my hands and on other parts of my body never peeled or showed any signs of exfoliation.

GOOD-GAWD you two!!! I'm at a loss for words! (and that's saying something). So I take it both of you have battled with acne? I was pretty lucky in that department. I only had the occassional pimple. Except when I worked at Pizza Hut. Talk about a pizza face!

Fast-forward to 2008: I had 3 small problems that began to bother me. A bit of slack skin beginning on my neck. Some creepiness below the coma's ( ) near my mouth and the skin above the eyelids that was beginning to sag. I don't think you can really fight gravity! But I can try! THAT'S WHY I'M HERE.

GYMRAT, you say you've been using RA since 1991?! Was it referred to you because of acne? I didn't even know it existed until last year. Tell me, does the peeling EVER stop, or is it an off again/on again thing? And why did you decide to add the Vit C ? What effects do you feel/see from it? I'm thinking about adding it.

I've just ordered some new moisturizers online. I'm not a health nut, but I am starting to lean towards non-chemical/non-synthetic products.

I have to keep things to a minimum ~ there's only SO much room in my luggage. As it is I have to pack everything in plastic baggies in case they leak (like my nail polish did once

I use the RA .05% on my neck and I have had great results with it. No peeling no stinging. I use the RA GEL .01% on my hands. Still no peeling but my hands look so much better.
