Do you have a listing of the other ingredients in the serums tho? Some things can cause a difference even tho the major ingredients are the same.

Skinceuticals has these ingredients in it: Water, Ethoxydiglycol, L-Ascorbic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Laureth-23, Alpha Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol, Triethanolamine, Ferulic Acid, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate.

Don't know about Cosmetic Skin Solutions.

Skinceuticals CE ferulic serum is patented, so I don't see how another product could be *exactly* the same. It could have some of the same main ingredients, but couldn't be a dupe. Still, if it works for you who cares?

There really is no difference, I have used both. The Skinceuticals I used for 2 months earlier this year and the Cosmetic Skin Solutions I am using for 3 months now; the only difference is that the Skinceuticals is yellowish-brown and teh Cosmetic Skin Solution is crystal clear. The Cosmetic Skin Solutions one, however, contains C, E, Ferulic, Hyaluronic, and also Zinc Sulfate which strengthens the skin and keeps acne away.

Yellowish brown? Mine was a bright yellow, but yours may have been old if it was more brown. Did you save some that you could pH test it to see if the pH rose and it was not effective any longer LnL?

I started using it the day it was delivered to my front steps, it was yellowish-brown when I opened, I didnt think anything of it as it was my first Vitamin C serum and since its from a reputable company, I didnt question it, but then I did more research and I still believe that C serums are not as effective or oxidized if they come like that color.

My Skinceuticals C serum was never yellowish-brown. A lightish yellow definately, but never brownish. Now, I have let my DIY C serum sit for awhile to see what color it would turn and it did turn a brownish color. Now that stuff I definately would NOT use!!!

I e-mailed cosmetic skin solutions regarding their ingredients for the c e ferulic serum, and this is what I received. The ingredient list appears to be identical to the skinceuticals serum , at least in terms of the ingredients and order. Maybe there is a difference in exact amount(s) used for the non active ingredients...

Ethoxydiglycol - would not want this on my skin.
Laureth-23- scary too.
Phenoxyethanol - eek.

Propylene Glycol - scratch that one while I'm at it.

For $142.00 US I can make liters of it without all the crap. And...you'd think for $142.00 they could minimum put it in an airless pump bottle.

Yes most of us here at SCT make our own C serum it is way too easy and cheap not to mention fresher.

Ive been using the Cosmetic skin solutions C&E Ferulic Serum as well. I dont have the time to make my own formulas or the money to buy very exp ones. I figured if Skinceuticals and CSS were comparable Id buy the CSS.. If the above mentioned ingredients aren't good for your skin what vitamin C product would you all suggest I buy? This is all starting to make me dizzy. Thanks

Lauren , I DIY it. Cheaper, fresher and I can play with how I want it to feel on my skin.

It's a basic calculation of percentage and volumes...more or less.
15% vit c by weight
0.5-1.0 % Ferulic acid dissoluted / dissolved in Vodka
1.0% Vit E

...and the rest is playing around with other goodies. Mostly SKB and a few lovely oils with other benefits.

Plop it in an airless vacuum bottle dealie....store in the fridge..pinkies don't touch the contents = low risk of contamination. Sterilize everything before I start making it.

Takes less than an hour...less than $10.00 tops...if that. The bottle is the most expensive part if you calculate per gram of emulsion...but it's reusable.

Because I am a bit anal retentive about what I put on my skin...I use a micro scale and graduated cylinders for accuracy. It's not necessary....just fun.

Micro scale makes it easier

LAA= 4.31 grams 15.0%
Ferulic acid = .14 g [ for 0.5 ] or .28 g for 1.0%
Vit E = .29 grams for 1.0%

17% so far...the rest 83 % is water and other goodies that are not going to bugger up the PH and / or interact with Vit C or Ferulic acid in an obnoxious manner.

Keep PH 3.0 ~ 2.8 = good to go.

Being a nature bug, you won't find me playing with anhydrous stuff other than oils. Personal preference and all that being what it is. Besides, they work great for me. Oil is not the enemy. I am an 'oily' girl....but not anymore...the Right Oils are the key.

Where do you buy these ingredients? I am sure there are different types of Ferulic, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. What type should I look for?

I think making this formula is worth a try, although I am a little hesitant the first time I want to get it right. Do you use measuring cups to get the proportions right?
