Thanks Tegan! Since it fell on a Wednesday it is a pretty slow week here. Lots of folks took the week off.

Yes, the sugar is a source of glycolic acid which is a wonderful (and cheap) exfoliant. So the topical use is good - in moderation, of course. But the article that goatlady posted seems to be talking about the effects of sugar at the cellular level, which are not so good.

I wish it worked that way myself.
The last time I bought one of those huge Hersheys chocolate bars I swore to myself I'd just eat one of the small squares everyday for health. Not possible......ate the whole bar.

Re: Sugar and wrinkles

I celebrated by LOAFING on my @$$ & had a grand time of it too.

I've heard the info about sugar & wrinkles. I cut down on sugar some years ago because I didn't want to mess with my organs that have to process all that. As a 'jelly belly' junkie (I've spent 25$ in one shot on these babies ). It is hard to explain, but I feel different since cutting back on sugar. I definitely sleep better, but my moods seem generally better & I have a glow I did not have before (I also have more money ). I also used to drink 2 c of coffee/day & I cut that out. Now, I might have some once or twice per week. This also means I'm not eating all those donuts & cookies too. I did not need to lose weight, I just wanted to do a health revamp overall.

It's interesting isn't it just how addicting sugar is. Worse than cocaine!

I read "Sugar Blues" a long time ago and it opened my eyes to the subject. Once I overcame my craving for sweet things, it was easier to pass on the desserts, candy, pop (even diet!) and other sugary sins. The book is pretty opinionated and goes into great detail in blaming Government for the pervasiveness of sugar in everything we eat in the US, but it makes for interesting reading. Sugar IS in just about everything on the shelves - that or the evil High Fructose Corn Syrup!

Glad you are staying away from the stuff Ondine! You really do feel the difference, huh?

Re: Sugar and wrinkles

Goatlady--I have followed a similar diet for years. I eat a lot of fish, little if any meat ever (usually a bit by accident), no sugars or processed food. The general rule I follow is other than fish anything I eat has to have grown from dirt. It is not always easy but it does work. I never was a coffee drinker either but due to health benefits I force myself now (yes I have to force it down me and I get ill from it!).

Just remember, dark chocolate is a true health food. Small amounts that is.

Re: Sugar and wrinkles

Yes; I definitely feel the difference. Now, when I have the occasional sweet desetr it often seems sickeningly so. I cannot gobble bagfuls of marshmallow bananas or strawberry marshmallows any more. One or 2 & it is too much. What was easy for me to indulge inhas become unapetizing. I can only eat small amts of icecream (before, an entire bucket of Haagen Daz was easy for me to just obliterate. It is a wonder I never gained weight from it all. Weight gain MUST be more complicated than calories in, calories out. There's something empowering about being able to choose when I take in sugary stuff. I used to get these madcap cravings for certain candies (Twix, Jelly Belly, marshmallow bananas....). It was so severe that even if there was a blizzard or a storm, I'd drag myself out for some. I don't mean one bag or bar either. It was a compulsion. Sometimes, I didn't even enjoy it! I just NEEDED it. I imagine this is what drug addicted people experience. Getting off the sugar bandwagon was a process: first giving up one thing. I added more whole grains & I felt fewer cravings. Then came giving up one more thing; like gummy bears. This made it less painful & it actually worked. I'd never want to go back to having that awful gottahaveit feeling.

Re: Sugar and wrinkles

If anyone has done the 20g a day Atkins Induction they know how tough it can be to get off sugar. I felt HORRIBLE the first few days. No sugar whatsoever, no bread, pasta, potatoes etc. Your body will scream and BEG for on chip cookie etc. Almost unbearable. Just get the induction food list and try it. IF you go by it and not waiver you will lose 5 pounds or more in one week. My husband did it a few years back and lost 10 in one week.

AH but they make pastas now with lower carbs! So after the induction phase you can still have your pasta occasionally of course! But I hear ya Ondine pasta is one of those gotta have foods. Total comfort food

Re: Sugar and wrinkles

I get the 'smart pasta' or thew whole grain-which is surprisingly good. You're a braver soul than I. They'd have to put me in the booby hatch before the 'induction phase' was over. Is Atkins that diet where people eat a lot of meat? Does it really work or do people stick to it for a while, lose weight then go off it & regain it all. Some diets cannot really become integrated onto normal life (like those milk shake ones). After a while, even someone with iron will would quit.
