Unfortunately with me I think mine are hereditary as my Father also had them. I get them on my eyelids, underarms and have one horrible large one currently on my back. They really annoy me.
I've seen ads for "do it yourself" removal of skin tags and moles. I wouldn't remove a mole but skin tags are in the same category as warts -- and I have used a home removal kit for them -- with success.

Re: skin tags

Im in Alberta and its the same as Ontario -You have to be referred by GP and they dont consider skin tags as a serious condition thats why removal is not covered by our health care.
I would only go to beautician who is highly recommended and she made a point of showing me that the needle used is from a sealed
package that is sterile and only used once and is thrown away after treatment. This is reassurance that there is no risk of infection.
She also advises on cleaning the area with alcohol and to put on an
antibiotic ointment if needed. The area is red and sensitive after treatment. It is being burned off afterall.

Re: skin tags

Hormone surges in pregnancy can also cause skin tags or increase the incidence in women who are prone to them. Weight gain in general can accelerate them as well (male & female), but they are very common & tend to be a genetic trait.
My dermatologist never suggested they were viral - that sounds odd?

Re: skin tags

It depends were you live in Canada on how long you wait to see a specialist. In larger cities I can see that it would take longer.
Also the availability of the specialist in your area. Sometimes smaller towns dont have specialists so you might have to travel to other city.
We only have one dermatologist in our city of 60,000.
Also depends on how serious the MD thinks your condition is.
If the MD thinks its cancerous, well then they would get you in sooner.
Skin tags is not serious so you would wait longer.
Ive also been able to pick them off when they are small.
And small ones Ive been able to cut off. Be carefull though and use alcohol to kill any germs and steralize anything you might use to cut them off.

Re: skin tags

I had a skin tag in my bikini area when I was a teen. I got it from wearing too small of panties. At the time I didn't know what it was and was embarressed so I iced it and cut it off with scissors. It worked but I would not recommend it again. Anyway what are the home removal ways/kits? I think I have another one on my backside and would like to safely remove it.

An Old Wives' Cure is to tie a piece of (clean) thread around the base after cleansing well with alcohol of, course. It will fall off on it's own. But make sure it's just a skin tag...you wouldn't want to mess around with a cancer-looking lesion.

Re: skin tags

You CAN cut off skin tags. You have be be somewhat brave, but I have done it with success. It's like any other abrasion on the skin as far as healing goes. But it can hurt. I googled it and found out about that option.

I hope not either! But you are wise to have it checked. *fingers crossed for you!*
BTW that was so kind of you to offer Freddy a Reiki treatment!! He really needs it, no?

Re: skin tags

Fawnie, suprisingly it's not itchy anymore! it woke me up in the middle of the night and I was scratching it. it's been 2 weeks. I put emu oil few times, I guess emu oil does miracles once again! It's like when you bring your car to the mechanic, the noise is no longer there! or the pain is gone before you go to the dentist. I will not miss this appointment for sure!

I've learned to do Reiki & VanRumpt last September, and so far, I saw miracles and almost instantly, one guy had a lower back pain (sciatic) and his leg was numb for over a year, especially when he was standing up and not moving, and in 2 treatments, the pain & the numbness was gone. I also cured a foot pain (faciite plantaire) a tendon rupture, only in one treatment, this friend went in physiotherapy 3 times/week for 2 months and it did nothing, I treated her foot once and immediatly after the treatment the pain was gone, and this has been 4 months ago and my "patients" have reported that the pain has never came back. I'm sure Reiki & VanRumpt will not hurt Freddy and I'm will be happy for him that he can get back on his two feet, hopefully faster! I feel like a mother, need to take care of her children, and Freddy is our "boy" isn't it? one big family!

Re: skin tags

Mariepop,

That is a wonderful story!
Yes! I think this is a caring loving "community" we have here that we look out for each other in this way! Freddy is one of our own. Each one of us has something to add.

I would be interested to know the name and address of your clinic. If you don't feel comfortable posting it, would you tell me in a PM? I know of some others who may benefit from your skill/gift. I know you are in Canada, but it would be worth the trip, I am sure!

Re: skin tags

Ho Fawnie you are so kind, I don't have a clinic, I wish though, but it's hard to make a living with Reiki because most people don't believe that we can cure only with our energy, a pill is what we have grown with, a pill for each of our pains. My teacher who has been doing this 20 years, only do it part time. For now it's only a "hobby", I do this in my living room, I have a portable massage table.

I don't know where you are but I'm sure if you go to a health food store, ask them if they know someone who do Reiki, (that is how I got to know about it) it's getting very popular, Vanrumpt is less popular but as much effective. Googled it you will find very informative information. I don't call it a gift, because anyone can learn how to do this. We all have this "gift", from what I read, if everybody was learning this, it will be a better world, not only because we would be better, but to be able to do this you have to like people, If I recall you are a nurse? You have to like people to want to take care of them and that itself makes a better world.

Re: skin tags

Not to change the subject- but last night at my bio identical siminar, the lady speaking said if you have skin tags, it is because you are insilin resistance. If you buy a book called The Insilin Diet and followed the diet your skin tags would shrivel up and fall off.

Might be worth a try, if you can stick to diets. I can't. If I try and follow a diet and know I can't have sweets, it only makes me want them more-

Gymrat, can you elaborate on what you learned on your seminar, maybe on the natural hormone thread, I'm curious about if there are side effects, if blood test is better than the saliva test etc.

Doesn't sound like a good idea. Not sterile at home and sounds dangerous! Let a doctor do it!!!!

Re: skin tags

Hi, Willy!

I had a bunch of skin tags removed in a matter of seconds! I am part Asian and have noticed that we seem to have a great tendency toward skin tags. Anyway, my dermatologist just snipped them off (no big deal) and dabbed some antibiotic on each and every one of them. Just as with the removal of the mole on the side of my nose, the next morning I washed my face and neck and the tiny scabs washed away leaving flawless skin.

Truly, no big deal! Have courage and faith, Willy! Practically painless. On a scale of one to ten, I'd give the procedure a two--and only because I had so many removed all at the same time (around eyes and on neck).

After I had them professionally removed, years later I removed one all by myself just by pinching it off between my thumbnail and fingernail. I put some Neosporin on the spot and was done. Before you think I'm crazy, that particular skin tag was at the outer corner of my left eye. It was pretty large and was driving me nuts. However, because I was on night shift at the time, it was very difficult for me to go to a dermatologist (I worked all night and slept all day). So, I decided (just once) to take matters into my own hands (no pun intended). Do see a dermatologist. I shared the pinching story above just to demonstrate how minor the procedure really is. You'll be so glad to have them gone!

I've read that skin tags can be a precursor to diabetes and this proved true for my sister so be careful and have your sugar checked if you get tags.
