what to use for old stretch marks (10+ years)

I have stretch marks on my upper thighs and butt for the past 10 years after gaining and losing weight. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. Though they have faded a little over the years, I want to see them GONE! Has anyone had any success in fading really old stretch marks? They are lighter in color than the surrounding skin.

Re: what to use for old stretch marks (10+ years)

Hi Dianne. I know your pain!! I have a few also but since I have darker skin, they are really visable. Once they healed, they got almost white in color and they are like 5 shades lighter than my regular skin color. I have tried EVERYTHING, and nothing really works to get rid of them. Maybe there is some type of plastic surgery. I should do some more research on it. I am also thinking of using a skin lightener on that area to basicaly blend the surrounding skin to match the stretch marks. I dont know what your skin tone is, so I cant say if that will work for you also.

thank you. Has anyone had any luck with Vitamin E creams? What about cocoa butter? I have been using both for about a year and have not seen much difference. Im wondering if I should still keep at it.

I just saw a new commercial today for a scar serum created by Palmers. Maybe it will help with stretch marks?

I have talked to a couple dermatologists and they both agreed that it is nearly impossible to reduce stretch marks using any sort of store bought product. They told me that creams can not actually penetrate the skin far enough to provide any real benefit. The only solution they had was to keep the skin moisturized while they healed and over time they will reduce in appearance. Also once the stretch marks have healed over a very long period of time (2-3 years), some type of chemical peels can help to soften their appearance.

genetics makes a big difference on how well the stretch marks will heal and even if you will get them in the first place.

Re: what to use for old stretch marks (10+ years)

From my understanding strech marks are tears in the deeper levels of the skin.

I have heard of some people having success with Strivectin and there are some people who have done needle dermabrasion in order to get rid of them.

Needle dermabrasion causes the body to produce more collagen which can repair the stretchmarks. It is not cheap and it is painful and if you have darker skin it can cause hyperpigmentation but there are a few people I know who have had success with that.

Re: what to use for old stretch marks (10+ years)

Needling or Needle abrasion or Intradermabrasion

A new treatment is emerging in the ever-changing beauty industry: needling or derma needle. It promises to be as effective as some laser treatments without causing almost any side effects.

What is needling?
It uses the same machine that is used to make tattoos or permanent makeup without any ink. The makeup artist or tattoo expert uses the machine on the target areas as if he or she would be doing a tattoo.

Smoothen wrinkles and expression lines
Improve skin texture
Reduce scars
Treat acne scarring
Improve stretch marks

What are the advantages of needling as compared to lasers or dermabrasion treatments?
There is almost no down time, no need for anesthesia, and low risk of infection. And last but not the least, at this time, it is much cheaper. However, it is too soon to tell the long-term effects and effectiveness of this treatment since no scientific studies have been done.

How does needling work?
Needling is done with the use of a commercial tattoo machine. The machine punctures the skin creating perforations. This stimulates production of collagen and skin renewal. When the new skin is visible, and this may take a few weeks and even months, the new skin is smoother. Collagen is the substance that gives skin its vitality, healthy glow and helps its continuing renewal process. The result is smoother, firmer, younger looking skin.

Because it does not burn the skin as lasers and dermabrasion do, the risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation is lower. It is also not as invasive, so the skin needs less time to recover.

There are no detailed statistics, but some permanent makeup artists who have been doing this procedure have seen that the skin can improve 40% to 60% in just one treatment. The procedure can be repeated after six months. Just as laser treatments for skin, the skin continues to improve for up to a year after the treatment.

Recovery time for needling
Right after the treatment the skin will be red, swollen, and very irritated. After a couple of days the symptoms will subside and makeup can cover the remaining irritation. The irritation and swelling will go away in a week or two.

Who cannot have needling?
Some people with dark skin may not be good candidates for needling because of the risk of hyper-pigmentation. People with diabetes and other conditions need to consult with their doctors.

Risk
There is a risk of infection, but it can be greatly reduced by the practitioner using the mandatory hygiene recommendations for tattoo parlors.

Hyper pigmentation is always a risk in this type of treatments.

Because it is not a standard procedure yet, it may be difficult to find a qualified practitioner. In theory, anybody with experience in tattooing or permanent makeup can do it, but most of them have never heard of needling yet.

Cost
Right now its cost is similar to tattooing or permanent makeup. It can vary by area, but a salon in Virginia is advertising from $100 to $150 per hour. This is of course much lower than laser resurfing treatments or peels.

It sounds like a great treatment, it is affordable, safe and non-invasive, but is still a new treatment without firm evidence of its safety and effectiveness.

Lindisima. Needling or Needle abrasion or Intradermabrasion

What does needling do?
All the information at this time is anecdotal and we could not find any scientific studies at this time, but there are plastic surgeons outside the United States already using the technique. Needling, as previously said, has some of the same benefits as laser treatments and some dermabrasion treatments. Needling can improve the following:

Re: what to use for old stretch marks (10+ years)

The thing with stretch marks is that you really have to treat them right when they are forming. If you wait, then they never really fade away completely. They will heal over time, but will never go away.

I read some stuff on the web about bio-oil and it looks like a good product to use BEFORE you get stretchm marks. People say that using it while pregnant will help prevent stretch marks from forming.

Mederma is amazing for scars. it says on the box you can use it for stretch marks as well. but i have never heard how it works on stretch marks except that it will leave a silvery line. and i am not sure if it works very well on very old marks.

Ive heard mixed things baout mederma. But like susan said, every "professional" ive talked to has said there is no real treatment for stretch marks. Not even laser or surgery will remove them unless they actually cut away the skin.

i got the solution mix vitamin E oil (1.75 @ family dollar) cocoa stick melted, and olive oil together in a bowl, massage on affected area and you'll see results within 2months, yes 2 months stretch marks are very hard to get rid of so it takes alot of time.
