A gram scale is on my list for this weekend's shopping.
Crescentmoon: welcome to the forum! SW melts nicely at 185%. When I compounded a 5% SW cream, the only problem I had with the actual cream is that I used a little too much creammaker wax & what I hoped would be a lotion turned into a cream. The thing with many thick creams is that while they're typically very emollient, they do not absorb quickly so yr active ingredients sit on rather than soaking into the skin. Despite not getting lightening at 5%, I still am very optimistic re SW & have by no means given up on working with it. This Fri, when my current test batch of cream runs out, I plan on incorporating SW into my next formulation.

thats it for me and compounding, no matter how many fomulations I made with thorough melting, I can still see some HQ crystals glittering when I put it on my skin, it just wont melt even after an hour and a half of work on the stove, I even ground them up first.

What a shame. I don't understand why this is happening to your HQ. Perhaps the guys who sold it to you can provide some insight. I made my creams exactly as described & the HQ melted right in. Have you tried using PG yet? Please, LNL, don't give up so soon: I made several disaster batches B4 finally getting something viable too & I'm still looking at ways to improve the formula ( tune in Friday to read all about it!)

| Its oversaturation. Have you got a microwave?

If he used his microwave for compounding with HQ, could he ever use it again for anything else? I'd thought of this, but couldn't find any safety related info re the effects on the microwave. I'd hate to hear he used it later to reheat his coffee & ended up bleaching his trachea.

| You only heat the DPG in the microwave - you should never heat HQ in a microwave. Never reheat a mixture in the microwave.
Use a glass pyrex jug and cover it with clingfilm. You only need to use it for 1-2 minutes maximum. Use thermometer to check temp. I stand and watch it, and regularly check it until it gets to the right temp. I dont leave it unattended while heating.
Ensure kitchen is well ventilated and you are wearing a mask. I leave the microwave door ajar for a few moments afterward.
Im ok so far but if I suddenly disappear from the forum without explanation, you'll know what happened....lol
Seriously though, the danger here is overheating your DPG and causing a fire. Otherwise, I think it safe to use (maybe not for the novice?)

Oh...and DO NOT LET IT BOIL. You have too be sensible, sometimes an amount as little as 50ML takes only 40 seconds on high power - depending on the microwave specification.

Let me tell you! I was mixing up a batch of POTION last night and was on the computer. I freakin' forgot I had the DPG boiling on the stove!!!!!!!!! I didn't smell the smoke until I got into the kitchen. The water had boiled out of the pot. I had it on high. The DPG was smoking like a ! A lesson to NEVER leave it unattended .
I'm trying this HQ/DPG/Eucerin/Glycerin mix until my PG arrives.

Thanks Ninasky. I didn't think HQ belonged in a microwave, but being relatively new at this, I didn't know for sure.
Goddess! Your post really got me laughing! It is sooo easy to forget stuff on thw stove. I've done it many times (fortunately, it was just plain old food!) I laways end up with a smelly black fried on mess to clean or a sopping cook-top & I always swear up & down that I'll never make the same mistake again....then I do it again! |

Hi guys! it is FRIDAY & time for a different test batch
This time, I'm going to make it as follows:
250 ml total vol.
Eucerin lotion as a base
10% HQ
10% SW
The SW is a strong exfoliant so this should be goood. It'll need to heat to 185 to thoroughly blend in the SW. THis'll be my 1st time blending HQ with another active.....I'll try NOT to forget it on the stove |

Well, I mixed it & it is smoooooth & beautiful. There isn't a single hint of tell-tale HQ grit & the 2 actives blended beautifully. The cream doesn't have a whit of brown either now, to use it for at least a week to see what happens...

I will be following in your lab footsteps as soon as my HQ arrives. (I decided to order the HQ from Adorama in New York). I tried locating it locally where I live with no success - so my only other choice is online.
As soon as it arrives I am going to try your recipe!
I did not get noticeable results from sepi-white. but that may have been my fault as I made a pretty weak strength lotion.
The HQ 4% and RA are doing a great job on my face. I need extra HELP in those tough areas (knee, elbows, etc.). My face is peeling like crazy.
I use RA .025 on my face, 0.05 on my arms and legs, and 0.1
My face is peeling like crazy.
Thanks all for all the great tips, help, advice and for just plain ol' being you (special holla' to Goddess )-

Thanks for sharing the info re yr routine & yr experience with SW. HQ4% & RA is still my favourite 'commercially obtained' routine. It is also very adaptable to suit most people's skin care needs. Using different strengths on different parts depending upon need & tolerance is also a good idea. My mother does this with RA. Did you find that SW was an exfoliant for you?

| Not at all!! As a matter of fact I BELEIVE I experienced the same darkening that you did. I use the SW primarily on my knees and tough areas. I truly believe they are darker after using the SW. I will monitor it closer when I do the new compound.
And cheap me - trying to save on shipping - bought the large container. So I'm not ready to throw the towel in on SW!!
I will find some use out of it - even if I sprinkle it on the dance floor to spin faster |
