Re: Do you avoid sun exposure?

CA is harsh. When I came back from my first real East Coast winter, one of my friends all but accused me of bleaching.

It's a sneaky type of in CA because yes, you let your guard down one day..or for half a day...and then whammo.

So many days start out grey and end in a blaze. ...Where on the east coast and in Europe the grey just remains.

Great for the skin ~ bad for my brain.

Most people who live on the East coast have beautiful skin. Living in CA my whole life and not wearing the proper sunscreen for a few years, can do some damage. It stinks to live somewhere where it is so HOT but yet I can't spend too much time outside otherwise I will end up looking like a lizard-

Most days here in the summer, it is just too hot to even go out, so it all works out ok for me. I love CA in the spring and fall. That is what I call perfect weather.

I do agree with you, the grey skies are great for the skin, but not for the brain- when it gets too hard on you, thats when you plan a trip to CA!!

TEXAS is worse than CALIFORNIA! from June to August the temperature in TEXAS is between 95 and 105 every day! these types of temperatures are unheard in Congo Africa where I'm from. the temperatre in Congo are between 80 and worse 90 and there are cooler areas like in the KIVU region in the Eastern Congo.

one question, how come in Africa like in the Congo it's less hot than TEXAS or ARIZONA but people have dark skin, whereas Native Americans and whites who've been living there for centuries have still pale skin? if someone can try to answer that.

Also, I heard in South Africa and Namibia too it's not as hot as most southern states in AMerica. so what's up?

Ok nikesh i hear you! but how come people in most southern african countries are dark skinned whereas in the southern states of America it's as hot or even hotter than Africa and the Native Americans remain light skinned as well as the whites settlers? that's my question.

we can strech to Arabia/the middle east too or even Asia.. it's incredibly hot there often but the people have more a light skin complexion than black Africans? sorry if i'm not staying in the topic of this thread, but i'm really wondering!

Exactly! I grew up in CA...outdoorsy family and friends, the whole lifestyle. For a long time, it was easier to take the path of least resistance... I gave in and roasted to "perfection" to "cure" my patchiness...lol!

It definitely feels like swimming upstream to have a disciplined sun protection regimen here. That's part of the reason that I caved in to my sun worshipping urges(also aesthetics like I posted in the anti-aging section.)

With 40 looming (and being sick of so much makeup... here I need at least 3 different shades to blend) is my wake-up call. I'm tired of looking like a calico cat.

The Easterners get the humidity plus the winter sun break. My skin and hair loved that moisture too.

Re: Do you avoid sun exposure?

I just had a vit D test and I am very deficient too. The dr has prescribed a supplement.

periwinkle: why do you say it should be way more than 1000iu? Is that not thought to be too high? The following says 2000iu is the max recommended - check out the article "Can Vitamin D Prevent Cancer?" on the American Cancer Society website www .cancer .org
I can't post links yet as too few posts

Thanks Periwinkle. You are right. I DID mean 1000iu. My Dr did actually say to take more but I was trying to be economical thinking that 1000iu was probably enough. OK, I will take some more. I should have listened to my Dr .

Re: Do you avoid sun exposure?

Does sunscreen help at all?

Usually when it's really really hot, nobody wants to be out anyway. I know I don't. I used to avoid it before I even started bleaching. I become sweaty, & I get really light headed from excessive heat. The news always warn people to go out in the evening anyway.

I wear sunscreen daily and take a multivitamin... does not having enough D vitamins have any adverse affects on skin complexion..?

Nope it's not thought to be too high. Too low in most cases. The American Cancer Society is not the best place to get your info. Their in bed with the FDA, drug companies, government, etc.......Oh don't get me started....woops too late.

Oh don't get ME started you meant to say-

You can research and find better info yourself, than what you can from American Cancer Society. That is NOT the best place to get the 411, I will just say that.

Well the internet is the best place to get it IMO. Places like Highest Quality Vitamins And Supplements - Life Extension
Imminst.org - Immortality Institute | Advocacy & Research For Unlimited Lifespans among others. I've been keeping up with health/anti-aging since the late 80's

No. I don't avoid the sun - it feels good! But I wear a decent sunscreen and limit my exposure to a sensible time and length.

I'm no expert but I think it is to do with where you are located and the time of year, more than the temperature. For example, you can still get badly burned on a cooler summer day as it is summer and the UV index will be extreme or whatever it is at that time of year, no matter what the temperature.
