extreme hand peeling

Thread Starter
I have gotten this type of peeling before, but it is getting out of hand. My hand forms blisters that inevitably break and then the top layer of skin begins peeling off entirely. I do not know why this happens, and try to moisturize, but it is no use. The iphoto picture does not do it justice as to the severity of the peeling because my skin is so white and blends with the peeled blister. Any suggestions?

It sounds like maybe you should go to a dermatologist and get his recommendations. You may have some sort of skin infection or fungus. Take care of it before it gets out of hand!

Oh My! You sound like you have what I used to have! I spend THOUSANDS of dollars at the dermatogist and on recommended products and NOTHING worked. For YEARS!!! :tard:

They told me it must be fragrances, to buy fragrance free.... that did NOT work! I tried EVERYTHING!!! That is, until I started making my own bath products.

If you don't have time, knowledge or interest in making them yourself, try this.... (this was my first step to oh my goodness YES!)

Take 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of epsom salt, 1/4 cup corn starch (optional), 1 tbsp of any cooking oil (olive, vegetable, something like that). And toss it all in a basin of warm water. Soak your hands.

Your hands WILL BURN (salt in the wounds), but wow, do this for a few days and you will see how your hands will feel better... Mine were totally healed in a week!

Mine hands were SOOO BAD! Total itching, burning, blistering, oozing, then the thick scabby skin, then trying to peel off all the dead skin only to have it start all over again!!!

Over time, I decided, I wasn't allergic to the fragrances... it was all the artifical preservatives and chemical additives in all those over the counter products we all love to buy!!!

I now make ALL my own bath and body products, have NOT outbreaks for YEARS!!!

I hope this helps!!! I'm no doctor, and even if the salt bath doesn't help you as it did me, I'm sure it can't hurt to try.... I was so desperate, I would have cut my hands off if the doctors told me to!

You could also just use 100% pure Lavender oil - it won't burn and it is a powerful antiseptic.

Use it liberally all over your hands 3 times daily. There's no problem using Lavender oil neat and it will help the skin's healing process.

I've never heard of anything like this. Maybe you are allergic to some chemicals at home?

Hello there. My name is Lawrence and I am in New Zealand in the south pacific.

My mother has had this problem for almost a year now. It started with wearing latex gloves as she developed an alergy and as far as we know she contracted staphylococcal. Her hands were basically very itchy, sore, these puss like things would come up and would be extremely painful. She would be constantly popping these puss things and peeling the loose skin off of her hands. We believe that the infection is gone now as the pustules are not showing up anymore. However, now her hands are in this continuous cycle of the skin peeling off and im talking about thick layers here. they peel off, leave a rough raw patch and before they heal properly they just peel and peel. She has also been getting these outbreaks of what appears to be eczema and its happening more often all over her body. We have been to doctors and skin specialists but noone has been able to help.

Please if you can give any advice at all it would be very much appreciated. Its just getting harder for her by the day. Its really sad.

thank you

I used 1% clotrimazole creme on my hands which cleared it up totally within a week. Clotrimazole creme is used to treat yeast infection and athlete's foot - can be found in any drugstore. Hope this helps.

No! Do not use clotrimazole on this skin condition unless the doctor tells you to do so.

This medication is used for fungal infections (yeast is a fungal infection). If it were a fungal infection he/she would have diagnosed this quite easily. Since he/she has not, it probably is not. Plus using this drug may cause adverse side effects on her skin which will only make the situation worse.

I am inclined to agree with you. Eczema comes in so many varieties that it is probably one of them.

I had similar symptoms to these folks when I was in college, including the peeling, bubbles under the surface of the skin that I would burst just to relieve the pressure, and so on.

I was working as a nurses' aide - which meant alot of contact with water, soap, medications, and alot of other "stuff." Yup - ha, ha, ha!

It was some sort of dermatitis, but the staff that I worked with wasn't concerned about it, so I just put up with it; I was working to put myself through school so I had bigger issues to deal with at the time. It eventually went away, although I have had occasional flare-ups over the past twenty five years or so.

Skin problems can be horrible - there is not always an explanation for why they occur, or any way to eliminate them. The best we can do is often just to give symptomatic relief - and maybe to distract ourselves with some other activity. This is how I got through it, anyway.

My mother had a terrible bout of hand peeling/itching/burning and Domoboro soaks seemed to help. It was probably related to the toner in the copy machine. Domoboro is over the counter.

I would go and see your doctor or pharmacist without seeing pictures of your hands think its very hard to say what this may or may not be! Also you dont just want to put anything on your skin!

It looks & sounds exactly like what I have suffered on/off since I was a toddler: dishydrotic eczema. with a secondary staph infection (quite common with sever episodes)

There are some Threads about eczema here on SCT, and tons of good info on the net.

It is very important that you get to see a good dermatology specialist! You may have to get a referral from your family doc but it IS worth it, they will be able to direct you to various treatment options that go beyond a normal Doc's script for cream.

It can be a very debilitating and subsequently depressing condition - been there : (
Good luck!

This mixture of epsom salt, baking soda & oil worked wonders on my hands for my peeling skin. I've had the skin peeling problems for years and have tried everything, but nothing worked. After two soakings in the solution, the peeling stopped and healed. Anytime there is a sign of recurrence, soaking my hands minimizes and heals the skin break. Thanks!!

I want to share what helped me with this problem. Skin on my hands and feet completely peeled. Finally, after all this nightmare was over it started to peel little by little on my hands again, on the thumb, under the nails and a little on other fingers. A couldn't believe it. I did the research on Internet and understood that nobody knows what it is. I was terribly upset, because people with the same problem was saying they tried everything, and this condition was coming back. Then I broke my ankle, had the surgery, and practically didn't do anything , just was laying in my bed. Hands became better. After a while I was moving to another place, and was helping packing, and hands started to peel again. At that time my cast was off and I was putting some cream on the scars on my foot. I am originally from Russia, and I had the russian cream, somebody told me about it before, it's all natural and really good for the scars, scratches, etc. I bought it in russian drug store here in NY, it's not expensive at all. I used it on my daughter, when she burned her finger, and it help to heal much faster, and it was no scar left. So, I started to put this cream on the scars on my foot 3-4 times a day regularly using my hands, of course. And miracle happened: my hands stopped peeling. I couldn't believe it, and thought it was just co-incidence. But after I didn't use it for several days, skin started to peel again on couple of fingers. I put the cream for couple of days, and it's gone. I can not tell you how happy I am. Now I putting it every night on my hand, and they are fine. The name of the cream is "rescue ranger" or in russian "спасатель". It's a green tube with white strips. If you have a russian drug stores or russian deli, you can try over there. There are russian stores in many cities in US now. I hope, it will help you as it helped me.

In a green and white striped tube just as you said. Contains seabuckthorn oil, turpentine (?), and other ingredients. Glad you found something to help and thanks for posting a remedy!
