I Just Made a Scrumptious Lip Balm By Mistake!

Don't you love it when mistakes turn out better than your original plans?!

I make a lip balm by combining honey, shea butter, beeswax, jojoba oil and almond oil, but when I used it I found it was a bit thick and dry.

So I decided to reheat it and add a bit more honey and some coconut oil. But when I poured the original mixture into the pan, the pan was too hot and the honey started to burn. I quickly took it off the heat and stirred in some honey and coconut oil and sat there mixing while it cooled, but the burned honey didn't mix back it - it stayed in dark, beady little drops.

So I was a bit disappointed, but I figured waste not wont not, so I decided to keep it and use it. It's actually really nice - the extra honey and coconut has made it really silky and lovely. But the best thing is, the burnt honey has added this lovely, warm, sweet smell, and it makes it look really interesting with little swirls of dark honey visible from the outside of the pot. I love my lip balm gone wrong!

Yay for kitchen experimenting!

Hmm, I don't know! I didn't really measure it, I just kind of guessed. At a guess I'd say:
a teaspoon of beeswax
half a teaspoon of shea butter
a tablespoon of almond oil
a tablespoon of honey
a tablespoon of jojoba oil
about half to two thirds of a table spoon of coconut oil

I can't really be certain. Perhaps it was more like 1-2 teaspoons of beeswax.

Hi, I was just wondering about the consistency. I tried making lip balm and don't much like it. Looking for something with the consistency of carmex in the little pot. Mine firmed up, but just feel really light and oily when I put it on.

Hey Jkg,

Yeah the consistency is tricky to get right. The first time I tried to make lipbalm it was very hard and them kind of light and oily when I put it on as well. This time (the second time) round it was kind of dry to put on, so I reheated it and added some coconut oil and the extra honey and now it's a really good consistency.

If your lipbalm is too hard I would recommend adding some extra oils, like jojoba, coconut, olive oil or something like that. I would really recommend coconut oil though - it gives a nice hint of coconut smell

Hope this helps a bit - sorry, my lip balming is all pretty experimental so I can't be any more specific

When I try to use honey in a lip balm I end up with little puddles of it on the side. What am I doing wrong? Is there a right time or temp to add it?

i make a lot of lip balms, and have found honey to be problematic, especially when the balm has gotten a little older. even when it was mixed fine to begin with, it seems to find its way to the bottom in little glops.

bear in mind, too, that honey can add a bacterial contamination factor to your potions. i always add some vitamin E for its preservative and antibacterial qualities (not sure whether it really does the latter though). expert ideas on alternate preservatives / anti germs?

i also use a lot of shea butter in mine. if overheated it can get really grainy (after it's a little older) and ruin your batch. i've started using the High Melt Point shea butter (i get mine from Majestic Mountain Sage).

here's what i use. can't give you quantities 'cuz i never measure, but they're in descending order of quantity.

shea butter (high melt point)
cocoa butter
(and sometimes coffee butter for a coffee batch)
sweet almond oil
(and sometimes rosehip oil if i'm making a rose batch)
beeswax
Vitamin E
flavor oil (i usually only use essential oils cuz they don't contain phthalates) but do use honey and coffee flavor oils from MMS sometimes cuz they're so yummy.
