How Hair color effects Complexion

Now thats its getting sunny out I thought it would be interesting to discuss haircolor and its effects on complexion. Although its pretty obvious that very black shades will make you appear paler.. thats not always the goal (in MY opinion)..its better to enhance your undertones exc than to wash yourself out.. Does anyone have any ideas on this matter.. Here are a few pics of celebs and their light/dark hair and how it effects the glow of their complexions... I know that dark hair can make you look paler... but to me black can also take away from the radiance of your skin tone too.. any body know?

I agree to some degree. I think it depends on your look, period. Black is exotic, and people that have exotic looks, look better with black hair more than they do with lighter hair. Examples below:

Nice, cute, pretty!

Sexy, Exotic, Hot & Spicey!

Cute!

Sexy, Delicious, Soothing to the Eye!

I agree about the glow for tanned skins though. I find I look much nicer when my hair is slightly lighter. I'm naturally dark-haired but 2 - 3 shades lighter and redder suit me better.

Yes, it is!

I guess I just like black hair. It's almost so common now for everyone to walk around with some light color, especially blonde or something close to it, that it lost its unique distinct and sexy look it once had.

Lol... i dont think Mary J looks good with all that blonde hair.
Its so overdone IMO............

I've never liked that look on MJ blige either. She looks desperate sometimes; like someone who's trying too hard.

Not to insult Mary J, but in some of those pictures her complexion looks like one of the deceased.

Considering your undertone is important too. sometimes people with olive undertones who go for auburn shades look disturbingly greenish. Then too there are those who have red undertones who go ashy (green undertone shades) of blonde & look like they're dying of rosacea. There are shades of every colour for everyone BUT the key is to not just 'go blonde' or red or black or whatever BUT to consider your tone & undertone & choose sensibly.

For my 2 shekels, the best look on MJB was the soft natural black with brown skin. With that too light greyish foundation, she just looks sickly & iron deficient but with the rich brown skin & black hair, she glows & looks much younger & more feminine. The blonde hair gives her a trans-gendered look.

In the uk all the teenagers (whites) are coloring their hair black, my daughter has black hair and she is white, I on the other hand had my hair dyed from a golden blonde to a white blonde and it made me look harsh and imo added yrs on me. Its all to do with skin complexion. I would like black hair but I know it wouldnt suit me. I need gold shades to brighten my skin.

I agree.. for instance ive noticed if you are deep red undertones reddish is a no-no.. being the same color as your hair can be wrong.. Ive HEARD (from a make-up artist) that those with yellow undertones and lil to NO red look great in in reddish/copper/ (she mentioned asian skin) shades.. while those with red undertones should opt for golden to brighten their complexion some... I like Mary with the long golden/blonde (the pic where she is looking over her shoulder) but you have to think to hard about make-up, clothing... everything and thats too much!

I love black hair but its opposite where I live.. I rinsed my already black hair with clear shine rinse bi-weekly to give it a high shine black and literally did that from like 16 to 22..i finally got bold and started rinsing (non-chemical) a honey brwn..since my hair was already black only the natural highlights caught the golden color.. it did WONDERS for my complexion. i think it brightens in a radiant type of way.. but im like you.. dark hair is awesome.. its sultry and romantic on those that can wear it..

I always have my hair a jet black. I think it makes my complexion stand out more

I did dye my hair a red/brown and I jst looked ill. Washed out and VERY pale. It was horrible
post #19 of 160
For some reason I have found the opposite for me. I look washed out and not so good with very dark hair.

Lighter shades and highlights tend to look better on me. And I get more compliments.

Although it has been a minute since I have had color. I want to do it again, but I am scared to have it done locally.

I must be weird... Because with dark, black hair... My skin looks tanner. And then the lighter I dye my hair, the more my skin looks brighter and a bit... lighter, I suppose?

It ALL depends on your undertones. If you are cool, go for the ash-toned colors, such as jet black (blue black), platinum blonde, cool blonde, cherry red, burgundy, ash browns, etc.

If you are warm, go for colors with the word "golden" to them. Auburns look dazzling on warm-toned people as well. For those who are more or less in the middle; neutral-toned individuals... Go for neutral-toned hair colors for the most natural look. You can do both cool or warm, although some neutral-people tend to pull towards either warm or cool. Try on some wigs in a store to see which ones make you look good!
