Melasma gone!

Thought I would share my experiences in trying to cure my melasma (15 years, both cheeks and chin). I believe now that my melasma developed due to fatigued adrenal glands and/or leaky gut syndrome (the two may be linked) after my first pregnancy. I initially went on the Candida diet and used GSE and MSM for a couple of months, which lightened it but not completely. I also developed allergies and IBS, and went for scopes which showed mild inflammation of the intestinal mucosa and some candida. Since I have been taking Glutamine and pre/probiotics to heal my Leaky Gut (which I believe I have), my IBS and allergies have disappeared and my melasma is almost gone. But in addition to that I have been doing "The Water Cure" (google it), which basically helps your kidneys retain the water you drink and stimulates the Adrenal Glands to produce Aldosterone (sodium/potassium balance). I've also been taking an Adrenal Support Complex (herbal) to help my adrenals cope. Other than that, eating plenty of fruit and veg, juicing, drinking water with sea salt, exercising regularly, and cutting down on wheat, dairy, caffeine and alcohol has been what has worked for me - FINALLY!

Hello dear,
Can you let me know more about water cure. I have searched it and found that we have to drink sea salt water. Can you enhance more on this?

Valerie, it depends on what your problems are at the moment. If you have candidiasis you first need to clear that up by doing the candida diet and taking GSE and MSM for at least 6 weeks. Doing the Water Cure at the same time would be fine. My skincare regime is cleanse, tone and moisturise, I use retin-a and/or vitamin c-serum once or twice a week, I use an enzyme exfoliator and hydrating mask once a week and I do a mild glycolic peel once a month. Larariding, the water cure involves eating a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt (not table salt) before drinking a glass or 2 or water (don't dissolve the salt in the water) - I do this once or twice a day and make sure I drink at least 8 glasses of water. If you also drink coffee or alcohol (which they don't recommend), drink more water. I first did the candida diet, then I did the water cure. I am currently taking the glutamine & pre/probiotics to heal my intestines, and also taking the adrenal support complex. I plan to stay on these supplements for a few months just to be safe. BTW, I tried hydroquinone, retin-a, lasers, chemical peels, etc etc, but the results were superficial because my pigmentation was dermal. All it did was lighten sun spots and freckles, but not the melasma. And it actually made the melasma darker over time (except for the peels, but especially the IPL laser - stay away!). Hope this helps

Janine - I am genuinely glad you got the results you wanted. And there may be some parts of the routine that other melasma sufferers can benefit from.

I have to tell you that my skeptic/cynic side comes out when I don't see scientific evidence to support so-called "cures."

For example, the "water cure" purports to prevent and cure:

heartburn
arthritis
back pain
angina
migraines
colitis
asthsma
increased blood pressure
diabetes
cholesterol

I've gotta tell ya, of all the hundreds of millions of dollars spent and all the clinical studies performed on trying to find relief for these severe diseases, never once have I seen the scientific study that said to drink a lot of water and all will be well with the world.

Not only that, but I think it borders on irresponsible to tell people to consume 1200 mg of salt per day in addition to the sodium we already get in our diets. Especially because the average adult should not get no more than 1500 mg of sodium per day.

I don't mean to be a jerk - but I call 'em as I see 'em. Having said this, I do think it's important to drink adequate amounts of water every day, mostly because it helps our kidneys.

Ladolcevita, I use a brand made in South Africa (where I live) called Saloncare which I get from a beauty therapist friend as they only use it in salons here. I make my own vit-c serum. Iamme, you are welcome to be sceptical and decide for yourself if you want to try the water cure - I'm not telling anyone what they should do, I'm just saying what has worked for me . I didn't do it for melasma, I did it because I researched adrenal fatigue and all my symptoms matched. Doctors actually recommend you supplement with sea salt IF your aldosterone levels are low. I have low blood pressure so I figured it would be fine for me to have a bit of extra salt, but if your blood pressure is high I wouldn't recommend it.

That extra bit of info is very helpful for people to know. You'd be surprised how many people just do stuff because it's posted! Again, I'm really glad you found relief!

the water cure is actually a very interesting theory. i have read the book a long time ago, and found it to be interesting.

Dr. Batmanghelid is not irresponsible in anyone, whatsoever. he says to use sea salt or himalayan salt, since it is lower in sodium then table salt, and to not start off doing this. adding lemon also akalizes the water, and lowers the sodium content.

he does not say just water cures you, but speaks about how the average person doesn't hydrate themselves with water, but with other liquids like coffee, teas, or sodas. just by simply replacing these liquids with water, it can alleviate a lot of symptoms of health issues, and along with a healthy non processed fresh food diet as he speaks of in his book. although that name "Water cure" may make you think he is speaking of just water curing you, he talks a lot about healthy foods and exercise.

he also says to use no more then a 1/4 teaspoon, and up to 1/2 teaspoon, but warms people who have health issues like high blood pressure to not do this, unless your under a doctors care.

again. his book is very interesting, and i would recommend it as well. i've been drinking water with a dash of himalayan salt and lemon, and haven't gotten sick in forever. i used to not drink enough water, and would only drink if i was thirsty. once i started to drink the right amount of water for my body weight, and when i exercise, my energy levels went straight up.

hope this is more clear and understanding for anyone who would like more info about the water cure.

Janine, I have all the same issues as you (adrenal fatigue, melasma, allergies, IBS, leaky gut, & probably Candida too). I'm interested in which adrenal support complex & glutamine you're taking?

It's quite amazing how thirsty I am now compared to before I did the Water Cure thing - I think my body forgot how to tell me it needed water because I was so chronically dehydrated. Most of the time I thought I was hungry, whereas actually I just needed water! My energy levels are so much better now and I feel great these days (and losing weight without trying). I'm using USN Pure Glutamine and Biogen Adrenal Support Complex - not sure if these products are only available in South Africa, but any pure glutamine would be fine (5g a day), and if you Google "herbs to heal adrenal fatigue" you can get an idea of what you need to look for - Ginseng, Licorice, Astralagas, Ashwaghanda and the B vitamins are the most important ones I think. Looks like you need to be on this for at least a year.

Could this possibly be because of the addition of 1/2 tsp of salt every day?

the how thirsty you became since the water cure, may be your body telling you need more water. remember the water cure advices 1/4 teaspoon of salt per 2 quarts of water. 2 quarts of water is 8 cups of water, but depending on your body weight and how much exercise you do a day, you may need more than the 8 cups you said you drink above with the 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt. i see you say your more thirsty, so clearly your drinking more water, but i suggest using this calculator to help see if your consuming the right amount of water. remember if your eating a healthy diet about 20% of water comes from the foods we eat. also add some lemon to your water, as this akalizes and lowers the sodium amount of the salt in the water.

both are supplements. GSE is grapefruit seed extract, and msm you can read about it here.

Melasma

some people find they help lighten their melasma. if you feel your melasma is fungus related, GSE seems to help.
