Did you check the auto stores, stores that sell car batteries?? I remember someone saying they found it by the car batteries.

Remember you are looking for Distilled water, not Purified.

Thanks Gymrat. You're absolutely right, Distilled water is a mare to find in the UK. I did find some "distilled water" in a shop called Halfords (for cars and the like), but some on here said that it wasn't right because it's de-ionized and not distilled. I still used it though because I had no choice and had all the ingredients for my serum begging to be used. If Radicallan found it in Boots then I'll be very happy. LBB

Steam Distilled Pure Filtered Water 2 x 1 Litre: Amazon.co.uk: Grocery

I just found this on amazon.co.uk - might be ok to use? and the only option if it isn't easily available to buy in the UK. LBB

Although, by the looks of it, they're currently out of stock....perhaps all the DIYers in the UK have already found it.

Another thing I keep meaning to ask is whether it's ok to use Gin instead of Vodka for dissolving the ferulic acid? LBB

No, gotta use the Vodka to get the FA to dissolve. Save the Gin for a cocktail-

If it says distilled water, it is fine to use. I remember someone saying using the de-ionized water was ok to use. I will try and dig up that post and link yo to it.

Who would have thought making such a simple Vit C serum was going to turn into such a chore- it will be worth it in the end, I promise!!

Thanks gymrat, I had contributed to that thread saying I'd found it in Halfords but was told it's de-ionised water not distilled - and whilst I still went ahead and bought it, I'd have preferred to find the distilled. So, when I saw that Radicallan found it in Boots, I was very pleased that someone had actually found some - here in the UK. But it seems that a few people use the de-ionised in their DIY and have no problems whatsoever. LBB

Could someone please tell me, in what form does the Borage oil come - capsules? Straight oil in a bottle?

so, I've been using the basic Vit C serum with FA and the sea kelp stuff for a while now and frankly, as much as I like it, I haven't had good luck with making it last more than a week. and so I end up wasting a lot.
I found this more simple recipe here in the DIY section that would be easier to make every week. I just made some and it seems fine, but doesn't sting like the other one does (I wonder if that means its less strong?)
I wonder if anyone has feedback on this? if it has less ingredients does that mean it isn't going to work as well? or is less stable? or something?

2 tsp distilled water
1 tsp L-ascorbic acid powder (I use lotioncrafters ultrafine powder)
2 tsp Cera Ve Moisturizing lotion (Cetaphil lotion would be great too)
1 1/8 tsp aloe
1/8 tsp vitamin E

I warm the distilled water a little bit then add the L-ascorbic acid and mix it really well until it is dissolved. Then I add the aloe and E to the Cera Ve and mix it. The E incorporates perfectly. Next, pour the aloe, E and Cera Ve mixture into the L-ascorbic acid and water. Mix well, pour into a dark bottle and shake it up.

I make a fresh batch every week.

(If 16% is too strong for you, reduce the amount of L-ascorbic acid to 3/4 tsp. That will yield a 12.5% serum. The PH would still be between 2 and 2.5)

PS. I used some of this new "easy" vitamin C serum this morning and it really did a fabulous job on my nose! I've had a lot of peeling due to increased RA use and icy cold winds and this Vit C serum really fixed that this morning. so, that's good news!

For skincare, it comes in a bottle. It is packaged like other oils you would use.......jojoba, grapeseed, almond, avocado, etc.

But there are also supplements you can take that come in an oil capsule form.

Also @anyone who can help - on my search for purified water, I noticed that Optrex (eye wash) ingredients has purified water + witch hazel. What do you think about using that in the DIY recipes, or would the witch hazel ruin the serum?

yep it was definitely in boots, it was near the medicine section in a glass bottle with a simple label, they had glycerin too.. it was a year ago before i even knew was a c serum was naive me! i haven't been in to check yet but right next to the boots near me there's a savers too and if i remember they had some also - dunno if there's one near you!

Distilled Water - 5.5 Litres FREE MAINLAND SHIPPING: Amazon.co.uk: Health & Beauty

is this ok? i can't believe i'm going to be ending up paying more for the water than the serum.. i'll keep looking

+ i'm still struggling with the ethanol/vodka, they don't seem to sell everclear here.

Yes that distilled will work. It will last you a lifetime too- If they sell it in a smaller amount get it. It only requires a little bit for the serum. 6 liters is a lot. Could be why the price is so high.

As for the Everclear........they don't sell it here either. I had someone get it for me elsewhere. Find the highest proof Vodka you can find and it will work perfectly fine.

Another option is to find "bacteriostatic water for injection". Needle exchanges in UK have it.

"The box says 'water for injections'
'the injection contains water that has been very carefully cleaned and purified so there are no chemicals, bacteria or mould in it. it is used to dissolve and dilute other medicines so that they can be given into your blood stream as an intravenous injection (into the vein). water is a natural substance in the body and so is unlikely to cause any problems.' "
Where can i buy bac water from?
haha you never know what you'll turn up on those muscle forums do you.

Dont sweat the ethanol - just buy the highest proof vodka. Not gin, rum or tequila <-- they arent as pure as vodka. Not the flavored stuff either!

I just made a DIY Vitamin C Serum using this formula

DIY Recipes for Beautiful Skin | Skinacea.com

Is it normal for the serum to sting? When I first applied it over my face and neck it stung like rubbing alcohol. All that's in there is ascorbic acid, distilled water, and glycerine.

If its the first time youve used a C serum or your skin is sensitive it might be too irritating for you at first. This is the instruction at the end of that recipe:

"If you find this percentage of vitamin C to be too irritating, you can always add less l-ascorbic acid. If it's not strong enough, you can add more, but don't go over 20%."

1) it was sticky and not at all pleasant to leave on my skin overnight
2) the granules of the ascorbic acid had not dissolved, no matter how much I stirred

What I am doing wrong?
Can I just mix water + ascorbic acid?
Is there another alternative to glycerine?

Some people use the monistat chafing gel. I warm my distilled water and the powder dissolved easily.
