I am very confused with all the skin care options out there. Should i use expensive salon products or are they a waste of very hard earned money? One dermotologist suggested the skin is incapable of using (using is the wrong word) these vitamins etc that are in creams and to use a simple regime of mainly cleanliness and a high octane blockout! What to do??? I have oily skin and am nearly 50!

I guess that dermatologist got his/her degree at the Sally Struthers school of dermatolgy.

Vit. C serum and retin-a (vitamin A) are time tested and proven by real science.
Although if he/she was referring to creams only in regards to vitamin C, they are correct.

I don't buy into the expensive salon products at all! You can get better results from the simple routine of Retin-A (or a retinol product if you can't tolerate Retin-A yet), Vit c serum (you can make your own), sunscreen, and facial exercise and massage.

You can buy Retin-A online much cheaper than in the pharmacy in the US.

You don't need the fancyshmacy Vitamin C serums with the fillers and fancy bottles. You can make your own and customize it in any way. There are lots of threads here about making your own.

Ditto, sunscreen. Lots of info here at SCT. Needs to be stable and high SPF/PPD.

Facial exercise/massage will tone the muscles and skin to the point that you will get results similar to (or better than - no scars!) plastic surgery.

Sure cleanliness is important. But you don't need any high-priced cleansers with glycolic acid. A simple one will do the trick.

Hi Moana!
Expensive salon products do not guarantee the total skin care solution you have been looking for.The use of these products do depends in your skin type. Your dermatologist also did got a point, you should practice simple routine. Sometimes oily skins are only due to staying up late in nights and bad diet. Live a healthy lifestyle.

btw:please be not confused with all the skin care options. That bunch of products does not mean you have to try and use all of them.I hope for your improvement!^^,

Hi Moana -- It's easy to become confused about skin care products because this is a gold mine for companies. I've noticed that most skin care lines are introducing new products regularly. They are trying to tap into various markets and with slick advertising promote what the buyer wants, not necessarily what their product will do.

Look at the products you are using -- if you are satisfied with them, continue; if you notice your skin changing, try a product to adress that change and if possible get trial sizes to make sure your skin is compatible with the product.
