'Cleansing' diets may be worthless or even dangerous, experts warn.
These are diets that promise to rid the body of its toxins but at what risk?
Detox Diets... Are they really safe? Or are they totally pointless?

Below I have 3 links but they are all under the same article, just different pages. Just thought to seperate it incase you might wanna just skip a page or two.

page 2__ Toxins, Toxins Everywhere? Detox Diets: Purging the Myths

ok, havent read the articles yet, but i can say that i have gone on a 'detox diet', about a year and a half ago in hopes to 'naturally' clear up my skin. it was a detox diet by anne louise gittleman in her Living Detox Diet book. i think thats what its called. anyways, i drank about 12 cups of liquid, water and tea and pure cranberry juice-- a day. and i didnt eat ANY white starches, took 2 tbsp flax oil a day, lots of greens and certain fruits, and only certain spices. barely any meat. in fact, i was supposed to weight out my meat. it was very tedious and frustrating since the 'detox test' told me i was highly intoxicated, with what symptoms i had, like oily skin, pimples, oily hair, splitting nails, and nauseated feelings after eating or feeling sleepy after eating, and TONS more symptoms, which i thought were normal at the time. so, i did this diet thing for about 2 weeks. i think i cut it short on the 13th day cuz i was going crazy with cravings.... but my final results were no NEW breakouts and major water bloat. lol. ummmmm, my acne didnt clear up, but for someone who was getting new zits like everyday, this was an improvement. this diet was like hell for me though and i didnt lose any weight which amazes me. oh and i was always tired.

thats my experience with the detox diet, not too successful, but i really think others could benefit from this diet a lot more than myself since before doing the diet i was fairly healthy and dont drink or smoke or eat candy.

hmmm interesting article. i totally agree with the last line:

Detox diets promise a quick fix, but in fact are just another round on the diet treadmill, Jackson-Blatner says. You can change your life in 10 days, Jackson-Blatner says -- but not through the Master Cleanse. Instead, use those 10 days to make the transition to a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables -- and then stick to that diet for good.

I can see diet wise how they can be dangerous, but on the other hand, detoxifying yourself to get rid of built up waste isn't that bad of an idea. Not to do it as a diet, but just to eliminate toxins and slowly introduce food groups would be great. You could find out if you have allergies to certain foods that way. Many people have allergies to foods w/o even knowing it as many symptoms are not what we'd expect them to be.

You are right. Detox diets should be used for eliminating the toxins...which they're called detox diets after all. Emphasis on the detox and not the diet. A friend of mine who has psoriasis did this before sticking to a really healthy diet and while it did not cure his condition (no cure for psoriasis) it, along with the new balanced diet, helped prevent itch attacks. Detox diets are useful for some but should always be done only under a doctor's supervision

Detox diets work really well if you do the right kind and for the right reasons. They shouldn't be done to lose weight only but to give your body a chance to clean itself up. 21 day purification programs work really well.

I would be carful about these? I did them before my first pregnancy about 8 years ago or so and got very ill. it took me a long time to feel healthy again. After each child I just try to exercise regularly in the gym or in the bedroom. Seems to help keep the weight off and get back to pre-pregnancy shape again.
