Welcome to the forum Anne. Hope someone can help you out.
Was the "skin specialist" a physician? If so, you should certainly do whatever he/she says. But if not (that is, if it was a cosmetician or whatnot) I would be very careful - since steroid creams should be used very sparingly (if at all) and very carefully in the eye area. Short term use is okay but should really be under a doctor's supervision, at least in most cases.
For puffyness or swelling I heard a lil preperation-H works. I myself never tried it but, a friend of mine says it works.
I think preparatin H cream is good for swelling but not for open, rashy skin or dermatitis. I would imagine it would burn like crazy! My best friend suffers from eczema around and under the eyes and her doctor said to use plain ol' vaseline or aquaphor(has a petroleum base). It forms a moisture a barrier on the skin. You could also find a very rich eye cream with a petroleum base with no color or fragrance or anything potentially irritating. Mario Badescu has a lot of simple, inexpensive eye creams.

The eye area is so sensitive I can imagine your pain having to cope with dermatitis in that area. If it was a proper doctor I would do what he/she recommended --did you receive a prescription?

What you need is something calming and gentle -- something with aloe vera as the main ingredient . A good pharmacist/chemist may be able to suggest a product for you. I hope you find a solution soon.
