I’m South Asian decent. I was Fitzpatrick 4 when I was younger but got tanned over the years. How long does it take to lighten 1 Fitzpatrick shade?

It depends on the product you use and your goal (remove tan or lighten).
3months to 1year to remove the tan. You can remove it in a very short time, but the result will not be permanent.

Fitzpatrick skin types don't really change, they're how your skin is predisposed to react to the sun, and not necessarily how light it is. A person with Fitzpatrick IV skin who practices SAP (Sun Avoidance and Protection) will likely be paler than a Fitzpatrick III who actively tans, so this measurement is not a very useful one for trying to help figure out how long it can take to get to where you want to be. :)

A better metric would be celebrity shade equivalent, or MAC foundation equivalent (a lot of people use that one).
