Kassy's C+E ferulic serum

What you need for 1oz C,E, Ferulic 15%;
- 2 glass shot glasses
- 1oz cobalt or amber dropper or pump bottle
- 1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid
- 1/4 tsp (1 ml) Vitamin E (equals 1%)
- .5% of Ferulic Acid (1 good pinch)
- 2 tsp SKB (Sea Kelp Bioferment)
- 3 + 1/2 tsp of distilled water
- 1/2 tsp of vodka (don't laugh, you need it to dissolve the FA so it's not gritty, and it also keeps the ph low enough!)

What to do;

- In first shot glass, put 1 tsp C into the 3 + 1/2 tsp of distilled water. Put on the side, stirring occasionally till FULLY dissolved (This can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, so have patience.)

- In 2nd shot glass put in 1/2 tsp vodka, and sprinkle the FA in and mix. (Little formulator spatulas are great for this!) When it has dissolved fully, add in the vitamin E + SKB and stir it all up well.

- When the LAA has fully dissolved in the 1st shot glass, mix the contents of both glasses together, stir very well, and carefully pour into your 1oz bottle.

Keeping it in a cool dry, dark place, or fridge will keep it potent + stable!

Oh sorry you're not feeling well...
It must be boring being home all day!
But I bet you have lots of projects to work on!

Yes, I don't know how George would get along with a dog, but the dog would be an outside dog anyway. George likes to go out, but is mainly inside. So we'll see.

Hi Fawnie, I made my first serum, it is flaky, I am not sure what I did wrong, I made HA too, I bought Veronique eye serum, I also got from Mimie RA. In which order do I use them? Thank you for your help. Erika

Not sure why your serum is flakey. Do you mean it looks flakey in the bottle or it GETs flakey on your skin?
Make sure the Ferulic acid is COMPLETELY dissolved b4 combining with other ingreds.
Sometimes HA serums cause things to ball up too. You might have to separate those things and use at a different time or make sure everything is dry before layering on a different product.

I dont know what "Mimie RA" is, sorry.

Found this on another site:

Phase A: Dissolve L-ascorbic acid in water and dimethyl isosorbide
Phase B: Dissolve ferulic acid and Idebenone in propylene glycol or ethanol. Heat gently using a double boiler.
Phase C: Mix D-panthenol and Hyaluronic acid gel.
Phase D: Combine Phase A, B, and C. Add Gelmaker, Idebenone and Vitamin E. Mix well.

The part I am confused on is it says to use heat for the ferulic acid and ethanol, not cold.

Here is the full site info. DIY Skin Care Recipes: l-ascorbic acid +E+Ferulic

So I was thinking of heating water in one shot glass to heat it up, then emptying it out, then the shot glass would be hot. Then adding the vodka (ethanol) and ferulic acid.

Or should I just use it cold?

Yes that is a recipe on Bulk Actives site, a few members here have tried that recipe before, but I am not one of them. I don't ever heat anything when making my C serum. And I use freezing cold Vodka, it all works great for me.

Bulk Actives is a great site to order supplies, etc from.

Thanks, I Pm'ed Fawnie and she told me to use the vodka cold. Waiting on my supplies. Can't wait to try it out!
This is an old recipe. Please use Kassy/Fawnie's Watermelon recipe or Kassy's 22% recipe instead. Progress is good!

Just wondering why in some L-AA serums that Kassy has formulated, there are emulsifiers like polysorbate, but in this one there isn't? Does this formula need to be shaken before each use?

Is SKB an emulsifier? In another thread I was told that it isn't.

Excuse my n00b-ness, and thanks in advance for your patience with me.

The recipe you speak of was one of my first attempts, and long before I started to incorporate an emulsifier.. I now put 'polysorbate 80' in all of my recipes, and it's been perfect.

SKB is NOT a true emulsifier, but it has acted to *emulsify* a tiny bit of oil into those particular C serum recipes.

When I refrigerate my C serums they seem to get thicker and also stay emulsified better.. When I have them at room temp, I do find I need to shake a bit, and they remain quite a bit thinner.

Thanks Kassy! I'll have a look at your more recent ones. Any favourites?
I actually can't get Vodka seeing as how I'm under the age of 21 (I am 20) and no one I know drinks.
Is there a replacement for vodka?

I believe some have use witch hazel in place of vodka. I have never tried it though.......

If you are 20, you have one more year until you can buy alcohol. This can be your first purchase......a very small (sample) bottle of Vodka so you can make a Vit C serum-

I know this was posted years ago and there are updated versions but this is the one I'm starting with.

I think something went wrong with how I made this. I followed the directions exactly. The LAA + water dissolved completely, no prob. The ferulic acid dissolved easily in a little vodka. But the SKB was very thick and gloppy. I couldn't get it to drop off of the spoon (I had to scrape it out). When I mixed it with the ferulic and vodka, it became the consistency of tapioca and I had to mix and mix and mix to get it relatively smooth, but it was never completely smooth. I did add the water and vit C and finished up. The final result looks like a slightly milky colored serum with tiny white floaters.

Is this normal? Do you think there's something wrong with the SKB?

Thanks in advance!

There isn't an "updated" version for this recipe......there isn't anything to update.....this isn't software ;) Kassy has blessed us with several great recipes....this is just one of many!! Your SKB shouldn't be so thick you should have to scrape it from a spoon. I literally pour mine from the container it arrives in. It is similar in consistency to hair gel/aloe vera. Not so thick it won't come off of a spoon. It will have a somewhat milky looking color once finished. This is from the FA. Not sure where the floaters came from, if your FA dissolved as well as your LAA........ This is the recipe I use.......with a few adjustments. in place of the glycerin, I use SKB. I also omit the preservative and the Xanthan gum. I have used this recipe for years, love it so much, I never consider switching.
Thanks Gymrat for the speedy reply! For now I'll use the potion I made up on my hands and try to find another source of SKB that's easker to pour/mix. -karen.
