MSM - Weight Gain

I was wondering if anyone has noticed weight gain while using MSM supplement ? I started taking it 1000 mg twice daily about a couple months ago. I have noticed that my hair grows faster and has more body...not sure if I noticed a firmer skin. However, I have gained about 3 pounds and it's been quite difficult to lose. I do feel it is water weight since I tend to lose it if I drink a lot of green tea in a day. I also feel more hungry when I take MSM.

I have been taking MSM 1000 mg once a day for the last 2 months. I ALSO noticed a tiny weight gain (~ 3 pounds) that would correspond to this period.

I feel that my stomach is ALWAYS bloated and I can no longer suck it in. I have always had a small waist, but I feel like it is bigger now.

Before reading this post, I though that my weight gain was probably due to all of the fiber I eat (though it is approximately the same amount as before the weight gain).

I hope someone can come in and maybe share a story or explain why MSM might cause weight gain.

Thanks
That is what I felt too. I was taking two 1000 mg capsules a day and reduced it to 1000 mg now. I will update if I see any weight loss.
In order to gain weight, you need to consume more energy(food) than you need to maintenance on a daily basis... That being said, perhaps it made you more hungry thus leading you to consume more? Otherwise unless it contains calories/kilojules I doubt it directly caused you to gain weight.
I just thought I'd update. I stopped taking MSM for last 3-4 days and have dropped almost all the extra weight. The bloating around my stomach has gone down also. I think MSM was causing me to retain water otherwise I wouldn't have lost all the extra weight so soon. It's too bad 'cause I loved taking it for my hair.
Warning

In an online forum moderated by biochemist Dr. Loren Pickart, certain individuals attested to gaining weight when taking MSM supplements. This might be because of an adverse reaction to the sulfur compounds, which can make a person bloated and retain water. If you experience weight gain when taking MSM supplements, discontinue use immediately

I stopped taking MSM by mouth and dang! I *do* feel less bloaty! Still using it in my face cream tho.

Fawnie how much were you taking?
I had backed down to 1000mg/day. At one time I was taking 3000mg but that was giving me migraines. What do you take?

I take around 4,000 split through the day and wonder if it's overkill. More than that and I get headaches too. I don't take it for pain but the benefits for the skin.

Are you going to stop taking it since it bloats you?

Yes. I did stop taking it. I only use it in my skin cream.

Hi Fawnie - Can you share your experience of MSM face cream. What benefits did you notice. Which one are you using. Thanks

Thanks for asking Skin!

Here is a recipe but I make my own cream and add 1000 mg MSM powder to each ounce.

In that thread there are links explaining what MSM does when used topically with research studies. I just started using it less than a week ago but I already think it makes my skin smoother. It will take a while to see if the collagen-building properties work on me.

Can I take msm and put it in any cream I have? Like however much I use on my face in the morning just stir it in...or do you have to use the recipe with the others added?

This is interesting what MSM does

"MSM softens the cell walls, allowing allergens, foreign proteins and any free radicals to be moved out of the system,"
MSM is an odorless, water-soluble, white crystalline material that supplies a bioavailable form of dietary sulfur, which plays a major role in stabilizing and promoting numerous body functions. MSM is responsible for the flexible bond between cells, including those that make up the skin. It acts to block undesirable chemical and physical cross-linking or bonding of collagen which is associated with tough, aging skin."
Im not saying this is the "right way" to do it, but I add a 1000mg cap (just the powder) to a one ounce jar of my cream and mix it well, let sit, mix again. Its water soluble so has to at least have SOME water I figure in there.

Kassy will SHOOT me for saying this tho!

Oh right. I forgot about pain.
We'll see how it goes. Can always go back to chondroitin.

Did anybody notice any smoother and firmer skin while taking MSM ? I hope it's not just in my head but I do think my skin was smoother, brighter and a little firmer while I was taking MSM. The bloating was a little difficult to deal with though, especially around the stomach.

Anyone knows any other supplement that could be comparable to MSM for skin benefits without the weight gain ? I take horsetail but it's not the same as MSM.
