For most of my life I've had dry skin on my face. I've used moisturizers on my face but nothing seems to work. I hate the flakey look on my face. Does anyone know of any products that work good. My skins is acne prone so it has to be something that won't irritate my skin. Any suggestions? I've tried changing face wash to see if that was drying out my skin, but nothing works.

It could be that you are over-cleansing your face. How often do you wash your skin? Is your skin dry all year round?

I had really dry skin around my nose that was flaky. I could do nothing to make it go away. I finally went to a DR. and found out that I actually had a skin disease around my nose and that only prescription strength cream would help it. Once I used the cream for a couple of weeks it was so much better. I would see about going to a dermatologist.

What type of moisturizers are you using. Make sure they are not oil based products. Skin needs to be hydrated, not lubricated. I use nuskin which is a waterbased product and has no harmful ingredients in it

I have those same flaky patches around my nose and found that Emu Oil takes care of it. When I first used this I did not keep it in the fridge and it went bad but I reordered and now just take it out of the fridge when I need to use it. Emu oil is not very expensive so you could give it a try, it's also good for Eczema.

Seems like any type of oil on the skin would clog pores.

I know that it sounds as though putting oil on would clog pores but it does not. I have oily open pores on my nose but dry flakey skin on the rest of my face and on the sides of my nose after I started using oils and using the oil cleansing method my oily patch has stopped being oily. I read about this treating oily skin with oil and it sounds crazy but it does work so you have to use different oils for different skin problems and not mineral oil which does clog pores and causes breakouts but using the Emu Oil has helped my skin and somehow my pores are much smaller now.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. I cleanse two times a day morning and night and yes it is dry all year around. Erika I totally agree with you I think it is time to see a dermetologist. I've had this dry skin for too long. I have the exact same thing flaky skin around my nose area.

I have an oily patch on my nose and the rest of my face is dry with red flaking patches. I don't know how the oils work I can only tell you that this is the first winter since starting to use the oils that I have not had the dry awful patches. I had to try different oils to see which ones worked for me some are too light and did not help but I've got a combination now and the Emu is the thing I use when I need to pull out the big guns. The oils are quite inexpensive so I think it's worth a try and yes I have been to a dermatologist but this works better than the stuff he gave me.

Are you serious? Doesn't it clog your pores?

I have heard of using it in your hair, but I don't think I'd ever put it on my face.

hmm..i have quite dry skin & tried loads of moisturisers too.
Ive found Aquaphor is really good. Its for babies but you can use it on dry, irritated skin and on tattoos and stuff like that. It's quite thick and greasy and horrible, so just put on a really tiny amount occasionally, maybe every week or fortnight on a night before you go to bed. It feels AWFUL but bare with it and your skin will feel soft for a couple of weeks.

I wouldnt use it too often though i should imagine it will block your pores up if you use it often.

Quite often the biggest problem with dry skin is not enough exfoliation. Are you using a scrub at least once or twice a week. Also using something heavy like Aquaphor is only masking the problem. You need to see a beauty therapist who can turn you on to the "right" product for your skin. Also lactic peels can be great for dry skin. increase water intake and try taking Vit E, Omegas or Evening Primrose oil to feed the skin from the inside.

Thanks, Georgia, I was just about to suggest exfoliation. Make sure if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin that you use an exfoliator which doesn't contain anything gritty that could irritate the skin. Try exfoliating twice a week and see how that works for you.

Ivy what kind of oils do you use? where can I buy it.

I would suggest trying Camellia,Almond and perhaps Jojoba oils to start with. Just 2-3 drops on damp skin, either spray your face or use it when you get out of the shower. The water helps to spread the oil and it just soaks right in, don't use too much though. Coconut Oil is another one you might try although some people find this a bit drying although I never have, Argan Oil is a bit heavier but you can just experiment and even mix a drop or two of each. You can find most of these oils at Whole Foods or buy online I get most of mine from Garden of Wisdom but you may also be able to find them at health food stores. All of these oils are inexpensive so you can try several. Hope this helps.

Does 2 or 3 drops really do it for you people? I have big-*** hands so it takes a few globs just to 'prime' my hands whenever I use a product. I use so much stuff it's not even funny. I don't dab the dots on my face either. I do it the man's old fashion way and just slather product on the face and scrub it in. HA!
