I have melasma on my face. I am looking for best sunscreen to protect my skin from further damage. Currently I am using LA ROCHE POSAY ANTHELIOS 60. Any Idea?
Could someone confirm this information? is there any medical or scientific statement, because i have melasma too and im using a chemical sunscreen for the moment waiting for my arrival of physical sunscreen.
My favourite is Avene spf50. It looks like it will go on white and pastey, but I massage it in well and let it soak into skin for a good 10-20 minutes before applying foundation. I also apply it upto 3 times over my melasma affected areas on my skin. I'm not a doctor but I really research products prior to purchase and I believe to stay away from products containing Oxybenzone as that absorbs the rays unfortunately which darken the melasma. Also make sure your foundation doesn't have oxybenzone in it.
I am out in the sun playing sports and I really feel La Rochie keeps me from tanning. I wa using shishito which has 16% titatium and zinc and I was getting tanned with this sunscreen. There is something in the La Rochie that makes it more stable over time. i only have to apply it one time.
I was looking into Avene but it has some chemical that cancels out when you used it with other sunscreen that contains titanium such as your foundation. Plus it is only stable for 1 hour. So you would have to reapply it.
Heliocare are a fantastic product. I don't know if its available everywhere but they have a vast range including oral supplements, creams and gels and spf 50 make up compacts. They are transparent and dont leave white residue and are designed for people who are ultra sensitive or after surgery. They range from 30spf to 90spf. Below I copied this from a supplier website to give you an idea incase you want to know more but they have different types for different skin.
Benefit of Heliocare Gel 90:
Heliocare's oil-free, easy-apply and light formulation touch gives it an elegance that encourages daily use. Heliocare Gel is ideal for all skin types and particularly suitable for oily and spot-prone skin.
•UVA / UVB filters: Advanced mineral filters and non-mineral filters have been expertly combined to provide the highest level of UVA / UVB protection
•Photobiological protectants: Fernblock–natural fern extract rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, combined with Green Tea extract, provide biological photo-protection
•Protection enhancers: Ultrasomes; naturally derived endonucleases help provide DNA protection and repair
•Non-comedogenic and water resistant
Heliocare Gel can be used for the daily prevention of photo-ageing and sun damage. It is suitable for lessening the effects of medication-induced photosensitivity, preventing melasma in greasy skins and photodermatosis. In addition it is fantastic for every day sun protection for all skin types. Heliocare Gel is transparent, water resistant and can be used under mineral make-up.

I am a 44 year old Indian woman, with melasma since 2003.... as you can imagine, I have tried everything under the sun, almost.... now using:
Lippu oil on the face 2ice a day
Eve fresh cream 2ice a day (first lippu, after 10 minutes eve over the lippu)
drinking 2 Tablespoons of pure, unrefined coconut oil
I have to say I see a difference in a matter of days, I am sure it will be amonth or two for it to totally clear up. look for an ayurvedic shop near you or online, they will let you know if these products are available near you
According to Wikipedia: 'A number of sunscreens have tanning powder to help the skin to darken or tan; however, tanning powder does not provide protection from UV rays.'
What! This is not good of you have melasma. I tend to apply sunscreen a bit thicker over the melasma areas.
It doesn't say what ingredients these tanning powders are exactly. Does anybody know?
I am suffering from Melasma for the last one year.. Using MELACARE as per the Dermatalogist from one week now... Pigmentation is fading slowly, but I am scared to continue using Melasma reading the after effect experiences. What is this Lippu Oil and Eve fresh cream? where do we get to buy them? Are you from India?...I am from Bangalore. Please advise.
As recommended I started using the Lippu oil and Eves cream and I have to say my melasma has lightened really fast with in 10 days of use every night oil and eves cream every morning...Im sooooo happy Thanks a lot Venetiam. .. You can get it at any Ayurvedic shop, my local shops did not have it so this people helped me http://jrksiddha.com/india.aspx.... All the Best and do update your progress
Hello Gurdeep,
Thanks for letting us know about this new product. I know from reading your other posts that you were trying other remedies. Have they not ultimately worked for you? Is the progress made by Lippu and Eves fresh superior to other remedies you have tried?
Hello Indym, I have tried some remedies for bags under eye like surgery, lecithin, fillers, cosmelan and so on but for pigmentation I did not religiously follow any regime but lippu oil was the only thing I followed and yes it did give me good results.... Where are you currently, if in India try the Ayurvedic shops..!!!
Thanks for the prompt reply, Gurdeep! I am based in the US, but indian in origin. Currently trying Vivete Vibrance Therapy which has glycolic acid and licorice extract. I have seen very slight fading, not much though. I dont think I will repurchase after I have finished the existing bottle. I hadn't heard of Lippu oil until you reviewed it here. What ingredients does it have? I didnt find much information on the internet on it.
I am from Bangalore, India. Have melasma for the last one year, tried with Melcare, peels etc. Initially it faded and then reappeared with more patches, hence I would like to try with Lippu oil and Eve fresh cream. Where do we get to buy this oil and Eve cream? Also I saw that as per previous suggestions, to drink 2 Tablespoons of pure, unrefined coconut oil. Did you follow this one too? Please help. Thank you!
BEST SUNSCREEN..La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL 50+ ...Fluid Extreme or cream available. Tinted or whitish. Imported from France, avail. from Amazon. Melasma spreads/darkens due to UVA. US sunscreens don't have to state how much UVA they have (yet...) and UVA breaks down quickly. Europe has to state the UVA available in a sunscreen. Anthelios worked/works well for me. It doesn't allow any tanning or darkening/spreading of the melasma. I guess they know how to stabilize the UVA. My derm told me to get Neutrogena for the UVA but it didn't work. I have to say...after a day at the beach in the water..Anthelios XL kept my melasma from darkening or spreading. I put it on, and put powder over it. Before I was using tons of zinc, titanium...creams...and I wouldn't tan..but the melasma would darken. It is all in the UVA. Right now, US companies can say they have UVA protection..but it may break down in light quickly, or may have very little in the solution..another that people have success with is Bioderm, also from France, with UVA. I thought the Anthelios worked better for me.

:thankyou:
SebaMed 50+ is the best for melasma in terms of sun protection, but it's a bit heavy on skin (unlike Roche Possay). On the other hand Roche Possay is very light and not greasy, but not as good in terms of sun protection as Seba Med. So I decided to keep using Seba Med for better protection.
