Stretch marks are a form of healing of the skin with a color tune. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, and over time can diminish but not disappear completely.
Stretch marks are often the result of rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth (common in puberty) or weight gain (eg pregnancy or muscle building) that exceeds the elasticity of the skin.Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy or other strength training.
Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the middle layer flexible helps skin retain its shape. N grooves are formed whenever there is support in the dermis. Stretching plays a major role in where the marks occur and in what direction they run. Stretching alone is not the case.
