I've seen photos of people with melasma, and I feel sympathy for yall. I'm just curious as to what could have caused this???

Melasma can be caused by alot of different things, but mostly its due to extreme changes in your body's hormones. Things like birth control, pregnancy and menapause are usually the biggest causes. You might have also heard of melasma being referred to as the "pregnancy mask". I believe it can also be caused by extreme sun exposure.
My dermatologist assured me that sun exposure doesn't CAUSE melasma. It is all hormonal. However, once you have it, the sun makes the markings much darker.
After lots of research and trying many different things, I've come to the conclusion that melasma is caused by excess copper in the body. This can be corrected in part by supplementing with zinc and some other minerals. If you do a search you can find details on exactly what and how much to take. Be careful not to take too much zinc as it can be toxic. Definately not more than 100mg, from what I have read.
  1. Melasma is a condition that is usually associated with pregnancy. While motherhood brings the joy of giving new life to a tiny being all your own, it also has its own series of side-effects and complications caused due to hormonal changes to the female body. These changes in hormonal activity often lead to Melasma. When Melasma occurs, the affected personâ€2122s skin becomes dark, blemishes occur and the surface appears discolored.
  2. Other factors that have been linked with possible causes for a person getting Melasma include using medications that make you sensitive to the sun (photosensitizing), be they cosmetics or medicines used to treat ovarian or thyroid problems. Those already susceptible to Melasma must take care to avoid unnecessary sun exposure.
