I live in the southwest so summers are hot dry and sunny. Right now my main focus is not redarkening and keeping another perma-tan away(I exfoliate regulary and I use sun protection to do this). So far it has been a month since I ran out of lightener and amlactin and I have not redarkened. I am at my natural skintone(about j lo's shade), and I decided to not lighten during summer. Well, lately I have really been admiring nina dobrev and selena gomez's skintones, I think I may hold off until winter(when I have a 3-4 month period to lighten without worrying about the sun too much). Would it be a waste for me to start lightening again? Because it might sensitze my skin to the sun even further and increase problems. Every summer I fight the perma-tan battle, and I lose every time. Would focusing on exfoliation and sun protection and maintaining be a better goal for me at the moment, considering my track record? Or is lightening possible during summer months?

Thanks for the responses, I think maitenece is a better option for me, but it is nice to know it is possible with a lot of hard work. Maybe I should continue my journal just to see if I darken any and keep track of things.

Its not impossible but you need to be careful to not expose yourself to things that could cause skin sensitivity and open you up to re-darkening or PIH. I'd personally ease up on exfoliating to 2x a week, look into lightening ingredients that don't induce sun sensitivity and make good use of clothing and hats to protect my hard work.

Good luck.
