Hi,

Does anyone apply sunscreen on their lips before applying lipblams or lipsticks. If Yes, Is it safe to be applied on the lips?

Also, what is the difference between sunsreen and sunblock?

My upper lips are dark compared to my lower lips do you guys think hiperpigmentation creams which contain aurbutin and kojic acid might help in the discoloration?

Thank you

Many lip glosses now contain an SPF. I like BM BUXOM glosses. They have a built in SPF 15. It's not very high but you can always apply a lip screen before a gloss or lipstick. It won't hurt.

I use proper sunscreen around eyes and lips as well. My lip balm has a SPF factor, but the only filter in it's ingredient list I could find is Octyl methoxycinnamate (Tinosorb OMC) and that blocks only UVB rays, so that SPF is useless and actually dangerous since it give a false sense of security, but at the same time exposes lip area to UVA rays. I kinda expected more from a manufacturer that claims to be dermatologist recommended (Eucerin).
Not to mention the fact that lip balms and glosses are shiny and attract UV rays to lips by enhancing the optical passage of UV rays.
So lip balms and glosses without any SPF are bad for aging and possibly even lip cancer (no research proves that yet). Lip balms with just SPF are just as bad, if they don't contain UVA filters, preferably broad spectrum ones.

Sunscreens and sunblocks are tricky. I think in some countries (might be wrong but wasn't it Australia?) the term sunblock is forbidden, because it implies a product that blocks UV rays completely. Such thing does not exist, no sunscreen yet invented provides 100% protection. Even UV400 and ANSI UV sunglasses offer just 99-100% protection.

you are SO GOOD AT FINDING ALL THE FACTS YOU DESSERVE AN AWARD! thank you Ray...I think I can speak for more than that majority here...We'd be lost without you! So don't thank me, it's us that should thank you for all the research you do. A lot of people seem to forget that it does take hours to sift through info to get at what is really important. SO I'm taking the time to thank you here..You sure have helped me out lots and others too I'm certain of that!

Thank you guys for the reply. I use lipbalms with spf 15 but as Courtney and ray say it is not very high and there is no mention of the ingredients for it to filter the UV rays.

Also, Can someone give me ideas about the discoloration of lips. Can Vit C be applied to reduce the darkness.

Any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

Thank You

Maybe these products can help avoid the sun damage. They all contain Avobenzone I believe, and because of that they are incompatible with mineral pigments (avobenzone gets deactivated and provides no protection). Since lip glosses and lipsticks contain uncoated mineral pigments, iron oxides, titanium and many others, they will lessen the protection.

Photoderm MAX Stick SPF 50+ / UVA 38

Garnier lips Kids stick

Garnier Lip balm

CAPITAL SOLEIL Extreme Sun Block Stick for over-exposed zones or sensitive areas SPF 50+ | CAPITAL SOLEIL

These two don't contain Avobenzone and can be used under anything, but they offer slightly less UVA protection:

CAPITAL SOLEIL High-Protection Lip Care Stick SPF 25 | CAPITAL SOLEIL

Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 36 PA++, .14 oz - Shiseido - Beauty - Macy's

There are also zinc oxide based versions:

purpleprairie.com - SunStuff Lip Balm SPF 30 - - SunScreen

Zinc lip balm - Shop sales, stores & prices at TheFind.com

And yes, vitamin C might help with pigmentation issues.

I've got the PurplePeri lip balm. It goes on too white for my liking. I have to take much of it off or dare looking like I kissed paint.

That Garnier lip balm above is cheap on EbayUk. Gonna get me some.
I've used plain sunscreen (chemical) in the past on my lips but does not seem to want to stay there. Plus I feel like I'm ingesting it. One designed as a balm should work better.

I had a Doh moment today while applying my Purple Peri sunscreen. It works PERFECT as a lip balm. I mean I have been using it on my lips the whole time.

Why I did not see this before I have no clue. It has the perfect consistency and stays on the lips well. Just a slight whitening like on the face.
Their spf lip balm is too whitening.
