Borage oil experiences?

I just started taking Borage Oil today. My stuff is vitacost brand--1300mgs capsules. Its apparently standardized, each capsule contains 300mgs GLA, 480 Linoleic Acid, and 190mgs Oleic Acid. I've started taking them because I got fat eating not-so-good foods and now that I've been eating better, I'd like to make sure I'm both getting good fats from diet and consuming enough from this supplement to push my body back into a healthful balance.

I take 2 daily (2600mgs). I've read that this is good for hair loss, skin, arthritis, and the immune system. Kind of makes sense, I guess, but I have no experience with oils, other than a short-lived trial of fish oils that ended when the pills went rancid. Anyway, I was wondering what (if any) experience you all have had w/ borage oil.

Is storage an issue? Should this stuff be in the fridge?

I take the same Borage oil and keep them in a cool dark cabinet. I have never had a problem with them kept this way. Some vitamins I keep in a little fridge in my bathroom, but my Borage isn't one of them.

Hi

Borage is one of the oils that I always refrigerate. I refrigerate all of my oils, but I have a fridge devoted solely for my business. But even when I didn't have a business, borage is one of the oils that always got refrigerated. In theory it can have a decent shelf life (up to a year) but it is known to go rancid quickly.

But if you have the capsules, they might be okay outside of the fridge. It depends what else the added to it (sometimes they add an antioxidant to it). Also since they are capsules, they aren't exposed to air, so they are a little more stable than the oil in a bottle.

HTH!

Cheers,
Li

I'm paranoid, so I always try to fridge any oil that is more than half unsaturated fats.

I absolutely love borage oil on my skin, but my digestive track doesn't get along with it too well. Lots of hiccuping and gas. :p Supposedly, your body can make it just fine with linolenic acid, so I don't bother taking it anymore. I'll consider it far down the line when I hit menopause, though. I've heard good things.
